  • MRN raises productivity 30% by adopting SoftExpert's cloud technology

    Published on 04/09/2024

The solution for management of corporate governance, risks and compliance, combined with an AWS cloud environment, guarantees gains in performance and safety in the mining company's processes Mineração Rio do Norte (MRN), one of the world's biggest bauxite producers, has implemented a SoftExpert solution to automate and integrate its corporate governance processes, including management of risks, documents and compliance treatment. As a result, worker productivity rose by 30% and the company maintained compliance with the sector's chief regulations, such as ISO 14001, which involves environmental protection initiatives; ISO 45001, covering workers' occupational safety and health; and ASI, a voluntary international sustainability certification covering the entire aluminum value chain. These achievements are a testament to MRN's commitment to producing sustainable bauxite that impacts and benefits over 100,000 people with social and environmental actions, reinforcing a commitment to continual improvement of the Integrated Management System, along with good practices in managing health, safety and the environment. Located in the city of Oriximiná, in the west of the state of Pará, there was one challenge facing the company of over 5,000 direct and indirect workers: eliminating the manual controls that were causing losses and inconsistent management of documents and records. Wvagno Ferreira da Silva, General Manager of Strategic and Risk Management at MRN, remembers how hard it was to manage document versions because of the parallel controls. "Our risk management was entirely manual; from identifying risk and applying the Bowtie method to self-assessment of controls, everything was done using spreadsheets. And oftentimes data was stored on the facilitator's computer, which meant the information in the system was not up to date," he recalls.
Now, every department in the company, from production processes to support areas, uses the SoftExpert GRC solution for managing governance, risks and compliance, in combination with the Amazon Web Services - AWS cloud environment, making it feasible to access robust, secure and efficient technological architecture. "One of the major benefits of cloud hosting is the ease of access to information anywhere and from any device. This lets us gain agility and focus efforts on just one tool that has a range of essential resources for integrated management of various areas at MRN," he adds. In addition to mapping internal risks and controls in an automated and integrated way, the software's holistic approach shows how the main elements in the organization interact, providing a clearer and shared view of the operating model and leading to more agile management. According to Wvagno Ferreira, among the significant advantages managers have found are the resource providing notifications to update system information, the ability to view data on dashboards and portals, and integration with other platforms. "SoftExpert fulfills every need for appropriate, dynamic and interconnected risk management that meets good practices, while also providing great technical support," he says in closing. On the radar for next steps, the company plans to intensify its use of the Audit, Performance and Action Plan components, further improving the flow of internal processes.
